In the article "Women in Politics", Wicks and Lang-Dion indicate that Women in Canada are stilling looking for their equal voice. The authors use  rhetorical strategies logos and ethos to strength their opinion and attract readers. For example, authors use ethos in eighth paragraph. Wicks and Lang-Dion quote Kim Campbell's suggestions to let readers know how women can win their equal rights and become certain roles. Kim is a public figure. Using her words is beneficial to make readers be convinced of content in this article. In addition, the rhetorical appeal logos are often used in this article. In thirteenth paragraph, Wicks and Lang-Dion demonstrate the causal relationship between the PR system and its good effect. This system "affects the behavior of the political parties in term of who they choose to represent them in the electoral process", so "this system can provide more opportunities to female candidates." The logos here show readers why this structure is good for females' equality.
Question: Kim Campbell said  females do not have chances to do some positions of leadership because" it is unusual for then to be in those roles." Do you think this opinion is right? Why women never do some positions? No chances? Or no abilities of these careers.

Borders

Sunday, 8 June 2014 23:25
The article "Borders", written by  Thomas King, demonstrates a story about a "blackfoot" mother never admits she is American or Canadian when she pass the national border. The main border in this article is not the physical national border. As far as i concerned, it is the border between the aborigines(blackfoot) and non-aborigines( Canadian or American citizenship). Also, I think there is a border between what "mother"  believed and are proud of in her mind, and what others want she to be in the real world. When stay in the national dividing border, "Mother" always admit she is "blackfoot" and never said she is from Canada or America. Obviously, "mother" is proud of her identity of "blankfoot",However, the border guards want her to tell the true citizenship and don't approve her identity as a blackfoot. In page 135 and 136, the border guard just asks mother the same questions several time. Though the guards are just do their jobs, we can see that the identity of blackfoot does not work when you want to pass the national border in the old years. Mother's abiding beliefs are not same as the real life she has.

Questions: Telling the border guard the true national citizenship is the wise way to pass the national border. Why mother does't want to admit her citizenship? Why she insists that?
The article "Moral Panic and the Nasty Girl" uses a lot of rhetorical appeal logos to indicate the serious phenomenon of female violence in Canada and analyze the basic reasons of  teenage girls violence occurring. In page 332, the eighteenth and nineteenth paragraph use logos to demonstrate that many "media discussion of girl crime" is caused  by these individualizing factors: "sexism, abuse, inequality and psychosocial problems". The authors tell readers about the reasons and results of girl violence, in order to let readers think about how girl violence happened before and what kind of strategies will be promoted in the future. Logos is a useful tool to make article more logical, and make reader understand article more easily.

Question: Which maltreat is more harmful to girls and happens  more  frequently in current society? Physical or spiritual maltreat?
.

"Post Princess Models of Gender", written by Ken Gillam and Shannon R. Wooden, indicate that the models of male has been changed in the current movie and TV Series. Recently, male roles become more effeminate, homosocial and emotional than before. Males' feminine qualities are get enhanced but their masculine qualities are dented. The authors make many examples and discuss many male roles, like woody and buzz,  in purpose of proving their theory. The examples are really good, and readers can learn much from them.
As far as I concerned, strengthening too many males' feminine qualities is harmful to the development of society and the growth of the next generation.  The word " Alpha males" make me remember a TV series I watched before. In the American teleplay "teen wolf", the wolf man " Derek" is a good example to prove my opinion. When Derek is a Beta wolf man in his uncle's pack, he is quite irresolute. Though he wants to take revenge on his uncle, the leader wolf, because he believes his uncle killed his sister, he  is still  effeminate and hesitates to kill his uncle. However, after killing his uncle and becoming the Alpha wolf in his pack, Derek is more ruthlessly and starts to demonstrate his leadership. Being the leader wolf in the pack make Derek more mature and inner-directed. Therefore,
masculine qualities can make males more strong and have more responsibilities to play their roles well in their lives. Feminine qualities will make males have no ability to commit.

Question: If females have more
masculine qualities and males have more  feminine qualities, do you think the mutual complement in the characters between males and females will be destroyed?

Pandemic

Thursday, 22 May 2014 00:28
"Pandemic: My country is on its knees", written by Stephen Lewis, is a beautiful and touching article. It reveals the truth as it happened about the Aids pandemic, famine, and war in Africa. In 1960s, Africa was described by Stephen as "a continent of vitality, growth, and boundless expectation". People from Africa suffered from the Aids, hunger and bullets. In this article, Stephen used many logos, ethos, and pathos to express his grieve to the Africa and its people When he narrated to readers his personal stories in Africa. I believe the pathos Stephen used is the most effective and impressive. For example, in page 377, Stephen told readers how how he loved those Africa kids. However, when he return to Africa in the late 1960s, he discovered that "most of his former students had died, some from bullets, some from hunger, some from both.“ Stephen described it as " the saddest and most wretched experience of his life. I believe Stephen even doesn't want to recollect this any more. In page 378, Stephen used a lot of pathos to talk about his sadness to Africa. Old Africa was "gentle, decent and welcoming", but now, Africa was filled with "oppression, disease and despair." Stephen wrote affectionately that how he loved the original Africa, and revealed his disappointed, shocked, and sorrowful to current Africa. He compared the Africa in different times, and it makes readers get the same feeling as Stephen felt.

Question: In "Pandemic", which appeals was used most frequently. Why he used this kind of appeal frequently?

Food Security

Monday, 19 May 2014 00:48
According to the report " Food Security", it is a big challenge to meet 9 billion peoples' demand of food nowadays, specially feeding poor people. The annual world grains output can not match with the burgeoning populations because of the problems within "producing, storing, processing, distributing and accessing". As far as I concerned, it's important for both developing and developed countries to adjust the food production mode, improve the farming techniques, reduce the food waste, look for new food source and protect the environment.
First of all, trend to produce some food with horter growing duration and lower planting cost. Adjusting what you produce according to appropriate percentages you got before is a good way to ensure that you can produce more popular and useful food. In addition, bringing local farmer a new production technology for mechanized precision farming is helpful to expand the area of fields and produce more yield gains. Also, using right store techniques is good idea to prevent the food from pests and spoilage. What's more, exploiting new fish stocks can increase the food supply and put downward pressure on land exploitation. Finally, both developed and developing countries should  protect the local environment, pay attention to climate change and prohibit overexploitation of land and other sources.

Question: Can you find any other good actions which is helpful to increase food production?
Martin Luther King's essay "Letter from Birmingham Jail" and Chimamanda Adichie's TED talk " the danger of a single story" are both indicate the inequality of the human beings in this world. Their opinion are similar: There is no human equal between the white people and black people, so it is necessary to promote and realize equality in the western countries. However their points of the cause of inequality are different because King and Adichie live in the different age. In king's letter, he said, " Any law that degrades human personality is unjust...false sense of inferiority" He believed the privileged group——white people in the American seldom give up their privileges voluntarily, and the society is filled with the racial discrimination. Therefore, in the Birmingham, one of the most unjust place, any nonviolent campaigns like demonstrations should be necessary and inevitable. Martin Lutter King talk tough in his letter and he was fighting for whole black people in America. Compared with king, Adichie talked more  about herself. In her presentation, she use her personal experiences to demonstrate the inequality in the world. She thought most white people, like John Locke who sailed to West Africa in 1561, have a partial cognizance and critical misunderstanding of the African, and this causes  the existing of inequality. In her presentation, she mentioned her roommate was a "kind of patronizing, well-meaning pity' to her when she came to America at the beginning. It's like what she did to Fide's poor family when she very young. The inequality exists because people sometime do not know clearly about you and do not find advantages you have. These are the different ideas from King's essay and Adichie's talk.

Question for discussion:
King and Adichie live in the different age, but they have the similar opinion. That means the inequality still exists in the world. Do you think the inequality between white people and other colored people will always exist or can be eradicated in the future?

Tarmageddon

Monday, 12 May 2014 06:33
Andrew Nikiforuk is a righteous Canadian journalist. In his report “Tarmageddon”, he indicated that Canada is encountering a series of environmental, economical and political problems because of the rapid exploitation of tar sands in Alberta. In the past, Canada was regarded as a decent "do-gooder" democracy due to its rich and unexploited natural resource. However, with rapid development of tar sands, Canada is turning into a corrupt "petro-state" and deducing its reputation in the world. As Nikiforuk wrote in the report, in order to maximize governments' interest, Canada strengthened the development of the oil products, and finally bring environmental degradation to the local area. Nikiforuk also made some specific example like the size of open pit mines and emissions of the polluted gas to describe the serious environmental damage. What's worse, Canada government still didn't even fully realize the big destruction they made to the world climate and take responsibilities of controlling this energy project. In my option, it is irresponsible for Canada government to downplay the magnitude of this crisis. Excessive exploitation of tar sands and failing to protect the environment are definitely false. Canada is a beautiful and clean country, not another Saudi Arabia. I believe sustainable development in the exploitation of natural resource is what Canada is looking for.

Question: It is inevitable for Canada government to promote sustainable development. Do you have any suggestions to Canada government?
